RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Medium-term evaluate the bond strength and tag formation in root dentin using self-adhesive cements Maxcem Elite (MCE), Relyx U200 (RU2), SeT PP (SPP) and Megalink (MGL) compared to conventional cement Relyx ARC (ARC) for glass fibre post cementation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred bovine incisors roots were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 20) according to the cementation system: MCE, RU2, SPP, MGL and ARC. All cementation systems were evaluated at 24 h (1) and 12 months (2) after post cementation. Specimens from the cervical, middle and apical thirds of the root were submitted to push-out bond strength test and confocal laser microscopy to verify the dentin penetration. The adhesive failure mode was classified as adhesive, cohesive and mixed. Data were analysed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 5%). RESULTS: ARC-1 and ARC-12 showed the highest bond strength (P < 0.05). ARC showed the greatest tag extension, regardless of the third (P < 0.05). The most frequent failure mode in the 24-h analysis was cohesive, regardless of the cement used. For the 12-month analysis, mixed failure was the most frequent. CONCLUSION: Conventional cement (ARC) showed the highest bond strength and tag extension, regardless of the evaluation period. In all cementation systems, the bond strength decreased after 12 months. © 2023 Australian Dental Association.

RESUMO

Abstract The cotton boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key cotton crop pest in Brazil. Adverse climatic factors, such as high temperatures and low soil moisture, dehydrate oviposited cotton squares (bud flowers) on the ground and cause high mortality of its offspring within these plant structures. The objective of this research was to evaluate the mortality of the cotton boll weevil in drip and sprinkler irrigated cotton crops. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with two treatments: drip (T1) and sprinkler (T2, control) irrigated cotton crops with sixteen replications. Each parcel had one emergence cage, installed between two cotton rows per irrigation system, with 37 cotton squares with opened oviposition punctures and yellowish bracts, to capture adult cotton boll weevils. The average number of boll weevils that emerged from the cotton squares and the causes of mortality at different development stages were determined per treatment. Third-generation life tables of the boll weevil were prepared using the natural mortality data in drip and sprinkler irrigation treatments and plus actual, apparent and indispensable mortality rates and the lethality of each mortality cause. We conclude that the application of water directly to the root zone of the plants in a targeted manner, using the drip irrigation system, can cause high mortality of the cotton boll weevil immature stages inside cotton squares fallen on the ground. This is because the cotton squares fallen on the drier and hotter soil between the rows of drip-irrigated cotton dehydrates causing the boll weevils to die. This is important because it can reduce its population density of the pest and, consequently, the number of applications of chemical insecticides for its control. Thus, contributing to increase the viability of cotton production, mainly in areas of the Brazilian semiarid region where the cotton is cultivated in organic system.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a new irrigant solution on the post space cleaning and the adhesive resistance of fiber posts. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Eighty roots of bovine teeth were randomly allocated into eight groups (n=10 for each group). Evaluations were performed in two different time points for each irrigant. The irrigants included a control group with distilled water (DW), 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA (SH), 1% peracetic acid (PA), and 5% boric acid and 1% citric acid (EX). The time points were 24 hours (I-immediate) and 6 months (D-delayed). The push-out test was performed using a universal testing machine with a 5 kN load cell operating at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute. The dentinal cementation system was analyzed using a laser confocal microscope (LSM5, Zeiss, Jena, Germany), and incidence of residue on radicular dentin was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The incidence of residue was evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis test and push-out bond strength and dentin penetrability were evaluated via a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: The EX irrigation protocol demonstrated the lowest incidence of residue on the dentin surface (p<0.05), independently of the evaluated third. In the cervical and the middle post thirds, EXI, EXD, SHI, and SHD groups exhibited similar push-out bond strength values (p>0.05). EXI, EXD, PAI, and PAD exhibited the greatest dentinal penetrability of the cementation system in all the post thirds (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A solution containing 5% boric acid and 1% citric acid can be a promising irrigant for radicular post space cleaning. It has adequate potential for cleaning the dentin surface without interfering with the adhesive interface between the dentin and the cementation system.

RESUMO

Background: Young children appear to spend large portions of their waking time being sedentary. Understanding the correlates of sedentary time would assist in developing effective interventions among young children. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the current literature on the correlates of objectively measured sedentary time in young children aged 1-5.99y. Methods: This review was registered with PROSPERO (registration no. CRD42017081374) and aligned with the PRISMA Statement for systematic reviews. Five electronic databases (MEDline, CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO, SportDiscus, Scopus) were searched up to October 26, 2017 for studies investigating correlates of sedentary time measured using objective devices. A semiquantitative approach was used to synthesize data. Results: Forty-five studies were retrieved comprising 13,430 participants, and 84 correlates of sedentary time in young children were evaluated. The associations between sex, sleep habits, daily patterns (childcare vs. non-childcare hours), childcare type and sedentary time were indeterminate. Thirty-nine correlates were consistently unrelated. Forty-one potential correlates were examined in too few studies (<4) to make confident conclusions. Parental sedentary behaviour was reported 3 times and maternal sedentary behaviour was reported once. Out of these four studies, three were positively associated with child sedentary time. Conclusions: Despite reviewing 45 studies that evaluated associations for 84 correlates, this review was unable to identify any consistent correlates of sedentary time in young children. Additional research is needed in this area to provide robust evidence of the correlates of sedentary time in young children, particularly for those examined in only a small number of studies.

RESUMO

Lung cancer is, by far, the leading cause of cancer death in the world. Tools for automated medical imaging analysis development of a Computer-Aided Diagnosis method comprises several tasks. In general, the first one is the segmentation of region of interest, for example, lung region segmentation from Chest X-ray imaging in the task of detecting lung cancer. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) have shown promising results in the task of segmentation in medical images. In this paper, to implement the lung region segmentation task on chest X-ray images, was evaluated three different DCNN architectures in association with different regularization (Dropout, L2, and Dropout + L2) and optimization methods (SGDM, RMSPROP and ADAM). All networks were applied in the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology (JSRT) database. The best results were obtained using Dropout + L2 as regularization method and ADAM as optimization method. Considering the Jaccard Coefficient obtained (0.97967 ± 0.00232) the proposal outperforms the state of the art.Clinical Relevance- The presented method reduces the time that a professional takes to perform lung segmentation, improving the effectiveness.

RESUMO

Several isatin derivatives have shown important biological activities, which have attracted interest from researchers. For this reason, the present study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects of the isatin derivative (Z)-2-(5-chloro-2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)-N-phenyl-hydrazinecarbothioamide (COPHCT) in mice. Three doses of this compound were tested: 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg. The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed using the carrageenan-induced paw edema model and the zymosan-induced air pouch model. The evaluation of the antinociceptive effect was performed through the formalin test and the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test. The paw edema assay demonstrated that all doses of the compound showed a significant reduction of the edema in the second hour evaluated, but a better response was observed in the fourth hour. The zymosan-induced air pouch model indicated that the compound, in all doses, significantly reduced leukocyte migration and total protein concentration levels. In the formalin test, the doses 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/kg of COPHCT showed activity only in the second phase, with reduction in paw pain time of 73.61, 79.46, and 73.85%, respectively. The number of abdominal writhings decreased with the increasing dose, but only 5.0 mg/kg COPHCT exhibited a significant response, with a reduction of 24.88%. These results demonstrated the ability of this compound to interfere in the anti-inflammatory activity of edema, vascular permeability, and cell migration. In addition, its possible antinociceptive effect may be related to the dose used.

Recently, dentistry presents a preventive philosophy, seeking early diagnoses and minimally traumatic treatments for patients. Cancer is known for its aggressive nature, where its signals and symptoms may only appear in advanced stages of the disease, therefore, reducing the possibility of using atraumatic treatment options and patient survival. Saliva has in its composition substances which can be used as biomarkers for disease diagnoses, one of those being microRNA. microRNAs are a group of small RNA molecules with 18-24 nucleotides which have functions such as the degradation of oncogenes transcripted mRNA. The aim of this paper is to explore all theoretical possibilities that microRNA offers as an early diagnostic tool for oral cancer. Studies show that microRNA can be directly linked with cancer gene regulation. Because microRNA is more specific to tissues and diseases than mRNA, it holds the premise of being a feasible, non-invasive, and stable biomarker for early diagnosis of oral cancer. The fact that miRNA can be found in saliva makes it an extremely affordable and feasible option as a biomarker to be used. Since it is linked to regulating functions of cancer genes, it also brings hope that in the near future, it could be used as a reliable biomarker.

RESUMO

The knowledge of the allergen content in the atmosphere is a useful tool to stablish the risk allergy warnings for the sensitive people. In Portugal the main airborne allergenic pollen come from trees (such as Betula or Olea), grasses or weeds (mainly Urticaceae). The present study sought the quantification of the Bet v 1, Ole e 1, Lol p1 and Par j1-2 aeroallergen concentration as well as how weather variables influence in the pollen and allergen concentration in Porto city. Aerobiological study was carried out by a Hirst-type volumetric sampler for pollen collection and a Burkard Cyclone sampler for the aeroallergens. A regression analysis between pollen and allergens was conducted for the identification the allergenic risk days. High Pollen Allergen Potency in the atmosphere was observed considering the low levels of airborne pollen detected. A significant and positive correlation has been obtained between pollen and aeroallergen values with the temperatures whereas the correlation was negative with relative humidity, rainfall and wind speed. Back trajectory methodology was applied in order to analyse the discordances between pollen and allergen maximum concentrations. The analysis showed that when the pollen and allergen peaks were registered on the same day, air masses always comes from the continent. However, when the peaks do not coincide, the air mass comes from the continent in the case of the pollen peak and from the sea for the allergen peak. This behaviour can be a consequence of the high humidity in the air masses from the sea, which can benefit the allergen release from pollen grains. In our study it was observed that the available traditional information for allergenic Type I patients, corresponding to the amount of pollen grains in the bioaerosol, do not accurately identify the real allergenic load in the air.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The cryopreservation protocol that has been developed exclusively for the preservation of the sperm of the species different. OBJECTIVE: this study was to evaluate the effect of the association of 10% DMSO with trehalose, raffinose, sucrose and lactose concentrations on the sperm cells of Piaractus mesopotamicus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sperms were collected from the animals through abdominal massage. The samples were diluted in the Beltsville Thawing Solution without different concentrations of other sugars (test conditions). Sixty days after the cryopreservation, cell movement analysis was performed using CASA. RESULTS: The results revealed that the parameters for total motility and motility period were superior when 100mM raffinose (P <0.05). The lateral displacement of the head was observed to be improved was 100mM lactose, 150mM sucrose and 150mM raffinose (P <0.05) as compared to treatment wherein lactose (0mM) was omitted. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Unintentional weight loss occurs among advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and is associated with worse survival. Small studies have suggested that weight gain during treatment is associated with superior survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis analyzed data from three international phase III studies comprising 2301 advanced, non-squamous NSCLC patients who received a platinum-based, first-line doublet, with or without bevacizumab and maintenance therapy. Body weight was recorded before and after treatment by each study's schedule. The relationship between weight gain and overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) was assessed using log-rank test and adjusted Cox modeling. Logistic regression assessed the association between baseline covariates and post-baseline weight gain. RESULTS: Four hundred and twenty-one (18.3%) patients had >5% weight gain after baseline. More than half of the weight gain cohort exhibited initial weight gain by 3 weeks. The median OS was 16.7 months versus 10.7 months for the >5% versus ≤5% weight gain subgroup (n = 1880) (P < 0.001). PFS was 6.9 versus 4.8 months, respectively (P < 0.001). Differences in overall tumor response rate (50.8% versus 25.4%, respectively) and disease control rate (tumor response or stable disease) (91.5% versus 63.6%, respectively) were also significant (P < 0.001). The Cox modeling revealed the >5% subgroup had longer survival [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.54, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.47-0.62; P < 0.001] than the ≤5% subgroup after adjusting for baseline factors. Similar significant results were found for PFS (HR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.52-0.67; P < 0.001). Unadjusted logistic regression indicated a significant association between weight gain (>5% versus ≤5%) and age, and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Weight gain during treatment may be an early indicator of clinical benefit. If confirmed in prospective studies, monitoring weight change may provide important information regarding survival outcomes in NSCLC and may provide ideas for new therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT The yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg) is considered a functional food, because, in addition to nutritional functions, it performs actions in specific metabolic pathways. The yellow passion fruit peel flour (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg) is rich in pectin. This fiber reduces the absorption of carbohydrates and lipids, influencing the metabolism of these nutrients. Individuals affected by pathologies associated with alterations in the metabolism of lipids and carbohydrates have used this resource indiscriminately, however, substances called cyanogenic glycosides, present in the fruit peel, are toxic to the body and harmful to health. In addition, the overuse of pesticides in passion fruit production is becoming worrisome and the ingestion of these compounds can also cause negative health implications. Therefore, the aim of this study was to synthesize the available knowledge regarding the therapeutic effects and side effects of supplementation with the yellow passion fruit peel flour (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg). A literature review was conducted from the indexed databases SCIELO, LILACS and PUBMED, without limitation to the publication period. The studies included in the work, unanimously, have effectiveness of supplementation with yellow passion fruit peel flour (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg). The crushing of the fruit peel, performed in the process of obtaining flour, is unable to promote a reduction of cyanogenic glycosides and pesticides, causing individuals undergoing supplementation to be susceptible to the toxic effects of these compounds. Thus, this study’s development to evaluate the toxicity of supplementation for chronic periods is very important. With reference to the use of pesticides, flour production with organic fruits can be an alternative to attenuate toxicity and it is necessary to elucidate this hypothesis through this study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Selumetinib (AZD6244, ARRY-142886)+docetaxel increases median overall survival (OS) and significantly improves progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate (ORR) compared with docetaxel alone in patients with KRAS mutant, stage IIIB/IV non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC; NCT00890825). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of OS, PFS, ORR and change in tumour size at week 6 for different sub-populations of KRAS codon mutations. RESULTS: In patients receiving selumetinib+docetaxel and harbouring KRAS G12C or G12V mutations there were trends towards greater improvement in OS, PFS and ORR compared with other KRAS mutations. CONCLUSION: Different KRAS mutations in NSCLC may influence selumetinib/docetaxel sensitivity.

RESUMO

The study was aimed to investigate the reproducibility of performance parameters obtained from 10-s maximal cycling effort against different braking forces in young adult athletes. The sample (n = 48) included male athletes aged 18.9-29.9 years (175.5 ± 6.9 cm, 76.2 ± 10.1 kg). The exercise protocol was performed in a cycle-ergometer against a random braking force (4% to 11% of body mass). Intra-individual variation was examined from repeated tests within one week. Descriptive statistics were computed and differences between sessions were tested using paired t-test. The coefficient of correlation between repeated measures, technical error of measurement (TEM), coefficient of variation and ICC were calculated. Agreement between trials was examined using the Bland-Altman procedure. Mean values of peak power were relatively stable when obtained from sampling rates of 50 Hz and ranged between 1068 watt and 1082 watt (t(47) = 1.149, p = 0.256, ES-r = 0.165) or while corresponding to a sampling rate of 1 Hz (t(47) = 0.742, p = 0.462, ES-r = 0.107). Correlations between repeated measures were high (+0.907, 95% CI: +0.839 to +0.947) and TEM about 59.3 watt (%CV = 5.52%; ICC = 0.951, 95% CI: 0.912 to 0.972). The present study suggests that reproducibility of peak power in male adult athletes tended to be acceptable and within individual error appeared unrelated to braking force.

RESUMO

The aim of this ex vivo study was to evaluate, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the presence of gaps at the interface between filling material and three root-end filling materials. Thirty human upper molars disto-buccal roots were instrumented and filled with gutta-percha and eugenol-based sealer. The apicoectomy was performed 2 mm from the apex and retrograde cavities were prepared with ultrasonic points (3 mm in deep). The samples were divided into three experimental groups (n = 10): Group I-white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA); Group II-Super EBA; and Group III-Portland cement. The root-end filling materials were inserted into the retocavities using a MTA carrier. After 48 h, the roots were transversally sectioned in order to obtain the apical 5 mm. Next, each specimen was prepared longitudinally with crescent granulation of abrasives water-wet sandpapers in order to expose the filling and root-end filling materials. Then, the specimens were subjected to slow dehydration with silica gel, mounted onto specific stubs and coated with paladium coverage for SEM analysis of the interface between filling and root-end filling materials. The percentage of gaps at the interfacial area was calculated by using Image Tool 3.0 software. Super EBA presented the higher percentage of gaps (1.5 ± 0.67%), whereas MTA presented the lowest values (0.33 ± 0.20%; p = 0.0004). Despite the statistical differences observed between Super EBA and MTA, all the root-end filling materials presented great adaptation to the filling material, presenting small amount of gaps.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the dentine/fibreglass-bonded interface by scanning electron microscopy and the push-out bond strength of four luting cements. METHODOLOGY: Forty root-filled human canines, with similar root lengths, were restored with fibreglass posts and randomly divided into four groups according to the cements employed (CG Gold Label I, RelyX ARC, BisCem and RelyX U100). After standardized post-space preparation, the root dentine was pre-treated for dual-polymerizing resin cements and untreated for the other cements. The mixed luting cement paste was inserted into root canals with a spiral filler and applied to the post-surface that was seated into the root canal. After 7 days, the teeth were sectioned perpendicular to their long axis into 1-mm-thick sections and submitted to a push-out test (1 mm min(-1)). Statistical analyses were carried out by two-way anova and Tukey's tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: The bond strength was significantly affected by the type of cement (P < 0.001) and by the longitudinal region of the root canal (P < 0.031). All cements exhibited gaps at the dentine/cement interface. CONCLUSIONS: The self-adhesive materials and the glass ionomer cements had the highest push-out bond strength values when compared with the dual-curing resin cement.
